The Breath of the Soul
The Breath of the Soul. Zen is the breath of the soul—not the body's breath but consciousness breathing itself. Walking in Zen, sitting in Zen—Zen is not a posture but a presence. The breath of the soul: awareness, which keeps the inner being alive.
This Is Sacred, This Is Divine
This Is Sacred, This Is Divine. The ordinary is sacred—don't seek the sacred elsewhere. This is sacred, this is divine: the cup of tea, the walking, the sitting—all sacred. The sacred is not separate from the ordinary. Zen makes the ordinary divine through awareness.
Discipline is Not Repression. The difference between discipline and repression. Discipline is not repression: repression fights the mind; discipline watches it. The watcher is the mirror—thoughts pass, gaps appear. In the gap, learning happens. The disciple is one who allows the interval with the master.
A Question Of Being
A Question Of Being. Not having but being—the ultimate question. A question of being: the mind asks how to have; Zen asks how to be. Being is your nature—having is your accumulation. Don't accumulate—be. The question is not what you have but what you are.
Playing On The Path
Playing On The Path. The path is not work—it's play. Playing on the path: the sage doesn't trudge—he plays. The path is a playground, not a battlefield. Zen is leela—divine play. Walk in Zen, sit in Zen—but playfully.
Absolute Love In Absolute Freedom
Absolute Love In Absolute Freedom. Love and freedom—the two wings. Absolute love in absolute freedom: love without freedom is bondage; freedom without love is emptiness. Together they are the two wings of the soul. The sage loves absolutely and is absolutely free.
Better Mad Than Stupid
Better Mad Than Stupid. The Zen master is mad by the world's standards—better mad than stupid. Better mad than stupid: the world's sanity is stupidity. The Zen master's madness is wisdom. The sane conform; the mad (in the divine sense) transform. Choose divine madness over worldly stupidity.
The Head And The Heart
The Head And The Heart. The mind divides; the heart unites. The head and the heart: the head thinks, the heart feels. The head is clever; the heart is wise. Zen moves from head to heart. The head creates problems; the heart dissolves them.
To Enjoy Life Is Bliss
To Enjoy Life Is Bliss. Bliss is not achievement—it's enjoyment. To enjoy life is bliss: bliss is not a destination but a way of traveling. Enjoy the walk, enjoy the sit—Zen is enjoyment. The sage enjoys everything, even suffering, because he is awareness.
The Garden Of Tathagata
The Garden Of Tathagata. The Buddha's garden—existence itself. The garden of Tathagata: the Buddha doesn't cultivate a garden—existence is his garden. All beings are flowers in it. Those who understand act naturally—they are the garden's natural bloom.
The Law Of Grace
The Law Of Grace. Beyond karma—the law of grace. The law of grace: karma is cause and effect; grace is the gift of existence. The sage lives by grace, not by karma. The moon rises, the wind plays—this is grace. Surrender and grace descends.
The Heart Always Knows
The Heart Always Knows. The heart's knowing is beyond logic. The heart always knows: the mind doubts; the heart knows. The heart's knowing is intuitive, immediate. The head analyzes; the heart sees. Trust the heart—it's never wrong.
Light In The Seed
Light In The Seed. The potential of enlightenment is in every being. Light in the seed: the seed looks dark, but the light is inside—the potential tree, the potential flower. You are the seed; enlightenment is your inner light. Don't despair—the seed will sprout.
Don't Abandon Existence
Don't Abandon Existence. Enlightenment is not escape—it's embrace. Don't abandon existence: the sage doesn't flee the world—he embraces it. Existence is not the obstacle; it's the path. Walk in Zen IN the world, not away from it.
So Lost And So At Home
So Lost And So At Home. The paradox—lost to the world, home in existence. So lost and so at home: the sage is lost to the world's ways but at home in existence. He doesn't fit in—because he belongs to the whole, not the part. Lost and found simultaneously.
All Moons In The One Moon
All Moons In The One Moon. All reflections are one—the one moon. All moons in the one moon: the many reflections (beings) are all of the one moon (consciousness). Don't chase reflections—find the real moon. The one moon contains all moons. Walking, sitting—all are the one.
