Now Sit Down and Listen
Now Sit Down and Listen. A Nichiren priest challenged Bankei: 'Can you make me obey?' 'Come to my left side.' The priest moved. 'Now my right.' He moved. 'You see—you obey.' Now sit down and listen: the ego resists words but obeys presence. The priest's pride was in his words—Bankei bypassed words and worked through the body.
Only One Exists
Only One Exists. 'Is religion really that simple that even I can understand?' Yes. Religion is simple—uncomplicated. Complexity is the mind's creation. Only one exists: not many, not two—one. When the mirror is empty, what complexity can there be? Simplicity is not easiness—it's the absence of the mind's complications.
Take no Thought for the Morrow
Take no Thought for the Morrow. Gasan heard the Christian Bible read: 'Consider the lilies—they toil not. Take no thought for the morrow.' 'Whoever said this is an enlightened man.' Take no thought for the morrow: Jesus and Buddha meet in this teaching. The lilies don't worry—neither should you. Tomorrow is the mind's invention.
Therapy is a Function of Love
Therapy is a Function of Love. 'How to work as a therapist in an egoless way?' Therapy is a function of love—without love there's no therapy. The ego makes the other defensive; love keeps them vulnerable. Therapy is a function of love: not technique but presence. The therapist is a lover—not romantic love but compassion. Without ego, you can't destroy—you can only heal.
A Master Echoes You
A Master Echoes You. 'What is Buddha?' 'Buddha.' 'What is Tao?' 'Tao.' 'What is Zen?' 'Zen.' A master echoes you: the master doesn't add—he echoes. He reflects your own truth back to you. You ask 'Buddha?' and he says 'Buddha'—confirming that the answer is in your question. The master is a mirror.
Grace is Being Herenow
Grace is Being Herenow. 'How to live gracefully in time?' Grace comes from eternity, not time. Time is neurosis. Grace is being herenow: when there's no past, no future—just this moment—grace arises. Hurry destroys grace. The timeless within you is graceful. Don't manage time—transcend it.
A Snowflake Dissolving in Pure Air
A Snowflake Dissolving in Pure Air. Bassui to a dying disciple: 'Your end which is endless is as a snowflake dissolving in pure air.' A snowflake dissolving in pure air: death is not annihilation but dissolution—the individual dissolving into the universal. The mind is not born, so it cannot die. Question: what is the essence of this mind? Die into the answer.
The Great Doubt
The Great Doubt. 'Why should silence be threatening?' Silence is the Great Death—greater than physical death. In physical death you're reborn; in silence you die utterly. The great doubt: doubt everything—every belief, every concept—until nothing remains. What remains after total doubt is the great awakening. Silence is threatening because it kills the ego.
Look!
Look! Chi Ch'ang learned not to blink, then to see the small as huge. He became the greatest archer but wanted to kill his master. Look: the archer's ambition turned him into a murderer. The true master teaches you to look—not to aim. Looking is awareness; aiming is desire. When the small becomes huge, you see the Tao in a grain of sand.
A Song Untouched by Time
A Song Untouched by Time. 'Living completely in the present is inhuman—graceful existence integrates past, present, future.' The ideal as such corrupts—any ideal. A song untouched by time: the present moment is not against past and future—it contains them. The song is eternal because it's untouched by time. Graceful existence doesn't integrate time—it transcends it.
